j.b. on the 'tube

here's the classic '64 clip from the t.a.m.i. show, and another from paris '71 with bootsy collins on bass, his bro catfish collins on _very_ funky gtr, fred wesley on 'bone, and the man himself spanking the keys. phenomenal stuff.

great stuff.

paris '71 changed my musical life. i can remember be a 17 year old punk listening to a tape copy my drummer friend passed me on my beat up walkman while working a stage crew gig at my high school.

it surely wasn't "cool" to listen to j.b. at that time - but i fell in love with that tape: his banter with the band, the seamless song changes, the larger-than-life power in that voice... holy cow.

i kept raving about it to random people and the general reception was one of "yeah, james brown, great." whatever... to this day, it's one of the best live recordings i've ever heard. an absolute freight train of raw energy it is.

gotta do some box-digging in the coming days and try and fish that one out.
